Are you plagued by eye floaters? If so, you will know only to well that they can be a major source of irritation and aggravation. They are especially noticeable in brightly lit conditions and prove to be extremely challenging when driving. How they materialize varies from person to person. Descriptions from sufferers report seeing dots, lines, cobwebs, either dark or semi-transparent, with numbers ranging from single appearances to hundreds. So, how can you get rid of eye floaters? In reality, treatment is limited to a choice of three alternatives.Do NothingSeemingly, not very helpful, but a majority of medical professionals will suggest that patients learn to tolerate and live with the problem. In all honesty, it is possible to become accustomed to them, as the optic nerves adapt and begin to disregard their existence. This is all very well, but they tend to increase with age, not only in numbers but also intensity. Even though a small proportion of sufferers state that they disappear of their own accord, the majority report that the condition worsens. Ignoring eye floaters then, is an option, but if they persist and get worse, perhaps another option should be considered.

SurgeryThe second option is surgery, which can be either laser surgery or vitrectomy. Laser surgery entails the burning of each floater particle with an ophthalmic laser. This procedure is costly, risky and so specialized that very few specialists will actually carry out this operation. The second form of surgery, vitrectomy, requires the removal of the vitreous humour, along with the floater debris within, and replacing it with a saline solution. On the whole, this procedure is an effective form of eye floaters treatment, but it does involve a higher risk of complications, such as eye infections, cataract development and retina damage.Holistic TreatmentThe third choice, thought by many to be the better option, is a holistic approach to treating eye floaters. This method involves making nutrition and lifestyle changes, together with natural supplements. Many herbal extracts have proved to be an effective treatment, because they revitalize the vitreous humour, resulting in the restoration of its normal fluidity and shape. Added to this, there are a number of nutrients and vitamins that can act to directly repair eye damage. This includes vitamin C, which repairs collagen, the protein that is present in the eye. Eye floaters are caused following damage to this protein. Another example is lutein, an anti-oxidant, which accumulates in the eye and provides protection against free radicals, another major cause.Lifestyle changes can also play a big part in getting rid of eye floaters permanently. These can range from the obvious, such as giving up smoking, to more obscure changes, such as an alteration to sleeping positions.

Hopefully, this brief insight into the three eye floaters treatment options will help in making a more informed and personal treatment choice.
